The Blue Biobanks Digital Research Platform brings together a growing network of biobanks to provide biological
resources and services to stakeholders of the Blue Bioeconomy – including researchers, industry leaders and
policymakers. The different biobanks support cutting-edge research, foster innovation and ensure the long-term
preservation of valuable marine and aquatic resources. By enabling access to high-quality living cultures and
preserved specimens, this network accelerates sustainable development and innovation across diverse sectors such
as blue biotechnology, environmental protection and regeneration or aquaculture.
Currently, the network comprises three biobanks of living cultures – Blue Biotechnology and Ecotoxicology Culture Collection (LEGE-CC),
CIIMAR Microbial Culture Collection (CM2C) and IPMA microalgae and cyanobacteria culture collection – alongside
two biobanks of preserved specimens – Biological Research Collection of the University of Aveiro (CoBI – DBUA)
and DEEP-Biobank.
