Who We Are
The Blue Biobanks Digital Research Platform was developed to support Blue Bioeconomy stakeholders by connecting blue biobanks within the R&D ecosystem. This platform provides centralized access to a comprehensive repository of biodiversity, making it easier to discover and sustainably use blue bioresources for innovative products, services and processes.
The Blue Biobanks Digital Research Platform aggregates data from diverse groups of organisms housed in different biobanks. Users can access a wide range of data and biological samples, including:

Culture Collections
e.g. fungi; bacteria, and microalgae

Preserved Specimens
from coastal to deep-sea environments.

Genetic Material
e.g. DNA, RNA

Extracts
e.g. EPA, DHA
Our aim is to promote the sustainable use of marine bioresources for societal benefit by adhering to FAIR principles – ensuring all data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. The samples preserved in the respective institutions are in compliance with Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) frameworks under the Nagoya Protocol and catalogued using the same set of standards and ontologies.
Our Mission
The data available on the Blue Biobanks Digital Research Platform empowers the development of a wide range of biotechnological applications. To facilitate targeted exploration and informed decision-making, the organisms of the different biobanks are categorized by:
- Blue Economy Sectors: Aquaculture, Blue Biotechnology, Blue Renewable Energy, Blue Technology and Ocean Observation, Coastal and Maritime Tourism, Environmental Protection and Regeneration, Fisheries, Shipbuilding and Refit, Shipping and Ports, Water Management.
- Fields of Application of the Blue Bioeconomy: Antifouling, Biomaterials, Biomimetics / Biomimicry / Bioinspiration, Bioplastics, Bioremediation, Cosmetics, Feed, Food, Medical Devices, Nutraceutics, Pharmaceutics, Textiles, Other.
